Your Makers Kit

Your kit contains:

  • 4 x 250 cm cord
  • 4 x 340 cm cord
  • 2 x 435 cm cord (short strap wrap)
  • 1 x 540 cm cord (long strap wrap)
  • 1 x bag insert

Step 1: Set Up

To save time and for your convenience (also for beginners), the first four knots have been completed for you.

Set up the knots so that one end hangs over the front of your worktop and the other end hangs behind.

The cords come in two different lengths.

Set up the cords as shown in the image here.

Step 2: The Chinese Crown Knot

Alternate between cords and tie the Chinese crown knot. You should have a total of 7 rows and 6 columns.

The columns should be evenly spaced apart, approximately 3 inches.

The rows will also be evenly spaced, approximately 2 inches apart.

Remember to work in the round, going in a circle finishing both the front and back of the handbag before moving on to the next row.

Step 3: Short Handles

Set aside the outermost cords (two on each side) for the shoulder straps. Divide the remaining cords on each side into groups of 3.

Cross the cords over each other to make the handle shape. Adjust to your desired length. It's recommended that you tape these together to keep them in place.

Finally, using your wrap tie cord (435 cm), use the Gathering Knot method to finish your handle. See the how-to video below.

Step 4: Shoulder Strap

Using the two cords on each side of the bag, tie Chinese Crown Knots to your desired length (approximately 5-10 knots). Then, use the Gathering Knot method and your 540cm wrap cord to finish your shoulder strap.

Step 5: Clean up ends

Using a hook or tapestry needle, pull ends through to hide within the the project.

OR

Clip any cord ends that remain sticking out.

If your project is made out of nylon (parachute cord), use a lighter to melt the ends and seal them.

If your project is made out of cotton, use a glue gun to seal the ends. See how-to video below.
